"History Hikes" and Other Tours in the Park...

Christina Fehre leads a hike in the southern end of the park.
Left, at the start of a
Winter History
Hike, hike leader Eric Nelsen presents his "sweep," historic site
assistant Veronica Sison, with a special commendation from the
Commissioners. Right, a
stop at a ruin along the
Long Path.

About forty hikers gather at the
Kearney House for our annual
"Solstice Hike" to Bombay Hook; returning by flashlight, the hikers are
greeted by a "honey moon" rising above Yonkers across the river.

Two separate takes on "Millionaires' Row," a winter history hike,
one in the snow, the other on bare ground. Above, hikers meet
at
Park Headquarters and then set out on the
Long Path,
stopping at the foundation remains of Sweeting Miles's estate on the cliff
top. Below, the hikers explore the ruins of George Zabriskie's "Cliff Dale"
estate. Bottom, "Cliff Dale" c. 1911.

On "Cape Fly Away," a guided history hike with historical interpreter Eric
Nelsen. Left to right: The group on the Closter Dock Trail; along the
riverfront, historical interpreters Veronica Sison (left) and Jenny
Despotakis look at handouts showing scenes from earlier days, while Eric
tells his tales; a bit of whimsy found along the Shore Trail; the group
climbs the old stairway to Excelsior Grove.

Historical interpreter Christina Fehre leads hikers on an exploration of the
southern portion of the Park: Above, the group ascends
Carpenter's
Trail; hikers look out over
Ross Dock; Christina with
Englewood
Boat Basin beneath. Below, the group returns on the
Dyckman Hill
Trail.

Historical interpreter Eric Nelsen
meets a group at
Park Headquarters to
carpool to Alpine Cemetery for "Meet the Folk," a tour of some of the older
gravestones at the cemetery.
