Greenbrook conducted
its annual Big Day Bird Count on Saturday, May 13, 2006. As in previous years,
staff and members searched the 6˝ miles of sanctuary trails in search of
resident and migrant species. The total number of species counted, always at
the whims of wind and weather, was 80.
The count began as
usual at 6 AM and ran until sundown. Highlights of the day included Cooper’s
hawk, swamp sparrow, Wilson’s and Blackburnian warblers and a purple martin
flying north along the Hudson River.
Big Day is part of
the International Migratory Bird Day and is celebrated annually on the second
Saturday in May. Greenbrook has been a longtime participant and submits its
count totals each year. The table below is the final species list for Big Day
