Big Day Bird Count 2009

Photo: Ken Habermann.

Greenbrook conducted its annual Big Day Bird Count on Saturday, May 9, 2009. As in previous years, staff and members hiked the 6˝ miles of sanctuary trails in search of resident and migrant species. The total number of species counted this year was 81.

The count began at 6 AM and continued until sundown. With rain in the morning and fog—at times dense—through early afternoon, much of the birding was done by ear. It wasn’t until mid-afternoon that there were breaks of sun, finally allowing good looks at some of the species counted.

Highlights of the day were bay-breasted and Blackburnian warblers, a pair of summer tanagers and a fly-over common loon.

Big Day is part of the International Migratory Bird Day and is celebrated annually on the second Saturday in May. Greenbrook has been a longtime participant and submits its count totals each year. The table below is the final species list for Big Day 2009.
