Plants currently blooming on the Palisades

Greenbrook Sanctuary and the Palisades are home to a large variety of  trees, wildflowers, shrubs and vines which provide a succession of blooms from early spring through autumn. Below are just a few of the plants currently in bloom.

TURTLEHEAD (Chelone glabra)

White or pinkish-white  flowers, ¾ to 1 inch long, in a spiked cluster at the tip of the stem, resembling a turtle’s head. Opposite, narrow, toothed leaves, 2 to 6 inches long. 1 to 3 feet tall. A plant of swamps and stream banks. Blooms late summer to fall. Found in Greenbrook at the pond edge. Figwort family.

WHITE SNAKEROOT (Eupatorium rugosum)

Smooth-stemmed plant, 1 to 5 feet high. Broad, egg-shaped leaves 3 to 6 inches long on slender stalks. Small white flowers in flat-topped clusters. Plant of rich woods and thickets. Blooms early August to late October. Found throughout Greenbrook and the Palisades. Composite family.

SMOOTH FALSE FOXGLOVE (Gerardia flava) 

Smooth, often purplish stem covered with a bloom. 3 to 6 feet high. Elliptic to lance-shaped leaves, with lower leaves deeply lobed. Plant is parasitic on the roots of oak trees.  Plant of dry, open woods and clearings. Blooms early July to September. Found in Greenbrook and along the Palisades on cliff edges. Figwort family.

EARLY GOLDENROD (Solidago juncea) ----- Throughout the Palisades.

ROUGH-STEMMED GOLDENROD (Solidago rugosa) ----- Sunny areas throughout the Palisades.

SILVERROD (Solidago bicolor) ----- Sunny areas throughout the Palisades.

THIN-LEAVED SUNFLOWER (Helianthus decapetalus) ----- “C” trail, near cliff edge.

VIRGINIA KNOTWEED (Tovara virginiana) ----- Woods and thickets throughout the Palisades.

WHITE WOOD ASTER (Aster divaricatus) ----Throughout the Palisades.
