Plants currently blooming on the Palisades

Greenbrook Sanctuary and the Palisades are home to a large variety of  trees, wildflowers, shrubs and vines which provide a succession of blooms from early spring through autumn. Below are just a few of the plants currently in bloom.

WILD PINK (
Silene caroliniana)

Pink flowers, 1 inch wide, with 5 wedge-shaped petals, indented at the tip. A rosette of lance-shaped basal leaves. A low plant of dry, rocky or sandy places. 4 to 10 inches high. Found throughout the Palisades in rocky cliff faces. Blooms in spring. Pink family.

MAYAPPLE
(Podophyllum peltatum)

Single, waxy white flower, 1 ½ to 2 inches wide, growing beneath two large, deeply divided, umbrella-like leaves. Yellow, lemon-shaped, 2 inch long fruit. 12 to 18 inches tall. A plant of rich woodlands. Found in Greenbrook near Little Brook and Kelders Brook. Blooms in May. Barberry family.

GOLDEN RAGWORT
(Senecio aureus) 

Ύ inch wide flowers with 8 to 12 bright yellow rays. Flower heads arranged in a branched, terminal cluster. Heart-shaped, blunt-toothed, long-stemmed basal leaves. 1 to 3 feet tall. A plant of low woods, swamps and meadows. Found in Greenbrook near “GW” trail. Blooms in spring. Composite family.

FLOWERING DOGWOOD (Cornus florida) ----- Scattered throughout the Palisades.

LYRE-LEAVED ROCK CRESS (Arabis lyrata) ----- Along open cliff edges.

PINKSTER AZALEA (Rhododendron nudiflorum) ----- Throughout the Palisades.

SPRING BEAUTY (Claytonia virginica) ----- “J” trail; near Kelders Brook.

SPICE BUSH (Lindera benzoin)----- Throughout sanctuary.

SWEET WHITE VIOLET (Viola blanda)----- On “B” trail.

WILD GINGER (Asarum canadense) ----- Along gravel road.

YELLOW STARGRASS (Hypoxis hirsuta) ----- Along trails throughout the Palisades.
