"A Day on the Rocks: A Photographer’s Exploration of the New Jersey Palisades" New!

  • Program Description:

Among his other duties, Anthony G. Taranto Jr. has served as our staff photographer since 2002. This has in turn enabled him to film the Palisades during all seasons, at all times of day. This unique access forms the basis of a stirring journey through a “day” along the tall cliffs of the Hudson—a day spread across the four seasons. Besides capturing the scenic beauty of this National Natural Landmark, the images also invoke the people who come to the park to relax, to exercise, to learn, and to admire the beauty of this “great playground next door.”

"The Unknown Palisades: A Slideshow through Time"

  • Program Description:

The Palisades Cliffs, steep stone walls that help define over 30 miles of the western bank of the Hudson River, stand today much as they did four hundred years ago, when European explorers first ventured up the unknown river. Yet as timeless as they seem, not a century ago they stood the very real risk of being obliterated, as massive quarry operations tore into them around the clock. It was through the efforts of a great many persons, both ordinary citizens and renowned philanthropists, that this scenic landmark was preserved. Spearheading the preservation movement was the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs, a dedicated cadre of women who a generation before suffrage, took on the powerful quarrymen’s lobby.

What the Federation succeeded in preserving is revealed in a slide show and narrative called "The Unknown Palisades." Among the images in the presentation: Hudson River School paintings of the cliffs from the nineteenth century, when fishing villages dotted the shore; photos of cliff-top estates; and scenes from the park’s heyday in the 1930s, when New Yorkers by the thousands came by ferryboat to enjoy swimming beaches and bathhouses, many of them built by the Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression. Interspersed with these images are scenes of the Palisades today, providing a haunting montage of one of the nation’s first great conservation efforts.

"A Certain House & Cellar"

  • Program Description:

For the past several years, the staff of the Kearney House has pursued a vigorous research initiative, relying upon primary source materials. What has this research revealed? Was this house really General Cornwallis's "headquarters"? Was it really a tavern? What do we really know about the families that lived in it? Your group can share in the fascinating glimpses of the past that this research has revealed, shedding new light on the development of eastern Bergen County, through a special lecture program.
