What follows below is a partial listing of park regulations that are of most importance to visitors. If you have questions or concerns, please call our administrative offices: 201 768-1360. This information can also be downloaded in .pdf format (1 page, updated for 2010).

ACCIDENTS

Accidents of any kind should be reported to the Park Police 201 768-6001 or nearest Park employee as soon as possible. Due to the configuration of the park and the interference caused by the cliffs, patrons are urged to contact the Park Police before calling 911.

ALCOHOL

Consumption of beer, wine, or liquor is prohibited in the Park.

BICYCLING

Bicycles are permitted on Henry Hudson Drive from Edgewater to Alpine, including Alpine Approach Road, provided that a helmet is worn at all times, bicycles have a minimum wheel diameter of 24”, cyclists are at least 14 years old, and cyclists stay right and groups ride single file.

Bicycles, including mountain bikes, are not allowed at Fort Lee Historic Park, on the Parkway, on Dyckman Hill Road, or on any park trails. The Drive and other park roads are closed to bicycles during hazardous conditions (see below).

BOATING

Trailered boats up to 24’ in length can be launched only from Hazard’s Ramp in the Ross Dock Area. Car-top boats may be launched from Hazard’s Ramp, Ross Dock Beach, Bloomers Beach in the Englewood Picnic Area, and Alpine Beach. Inflatable boats of any size or kind may not be launched from within Park boundaries.

DECORATIONS,
MARKINGS
& SIGNAGE

No decorations, markings, or signage shall be affixed to, drawn on, or hung on any park building, sign, gate, post, road, wall, or other structure without the approval of the Superintendent. This shall include, but not be limited to, paint, balloons, posters, signs, chalk, banners, etc.

FIRES

Fires for cooking are permitted in designated picnic areas only and are prohibited at Fort Lee Historic Park, State Line Lookout, on hiking trails, and in wooded areas. Fires must be contained in a grill, barbecue, or fire ring suitable for that purpose. Ground fires, garbage-can fires, and candles are prohibited. Grills are not permitted on tables, in any structure or under any building overhang. Coals must be extinguished before being disposed of properly in coal barrels. Patrons are permitted to bring their own grills and fuel.

FISHING

Fishing and crabbing are permitted from the docks and along the seawall. Licenses are not necessary, but activities are subject to the regulations of the NJ-DEP. All State size and possession limits apply.

FLORA & FAUNA

Destruction, damage, or removal of trees, shrubs, flowers, wildlife, and other living things is prohibited.

HENRY HUDSON DRIVE

From time to time, the Drive may be temporarily closed for maintenance work or emergency situations, such as rockslides and tree falls. At such times, the Drive is closed to all vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians. When a barrier or sign has been put in place by the Park on any of its roadways, the roadway beyond that barrier is to be considered closed for ALL use. Those going beyond such a barrier are subject to prosecution.

HOURS

Park areas are open during daylight hours only, dawn to dusk.

LITTER & RECYCLING

All garbage must be disposed of in receptacles provided for that purpose. Littering, polluting, and dumping on Park lands or in Park waters are prohibited. Please separate aluminum, glass, and plastics from your trash and place in marked receptacles.

LOST & FOUND

Found articles should be turned over to area attendants or to the Park Police. Lost articles can be retrieved at the Park Police Headquarters on the first floor of the Administration Building in Alpine.

NOISE

Loud and unreasonable noise is prohibited. Music is permitted in Park areas at a reasonable volume that does not disturb other Park patrons or disrupt Park events.

PARKING

Vehicles must park in designated areas following payment of established fees. Parking on or along any Park road or in undesignated areas is prohibited. Cars without boat trailers may only use Hazard’s Ramp if they have a car-top boat. After hours and overnight parking are prohibited, unless approved by the Superintendent.

PERMITS

Permits are required for 1) picnics or outings involving 25 or more participants, 2) buses or vehicles seating 15 or more people, 3) commercial photography or filming, 4) facility rentals, 5) educational research, 6) metal detecting, and 7) camping. Permits must be obtained in advance from Park Headquarters during regular business hours. If in doubt about your activity, please call 201-768-1360.

PETS

Pets are prohibited in any picnic area, developed area, or on paved surfaces. Properly leashed and cleaned-up after, they may be taken on trails. Pets are not allowed at Fort Lee Historic Park or in any building operated by the Commission.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES

Swimming, cliff climbing, hunting, trapping, horseback riding, snowmobiling, gambling, advertising, soliciting, vending, and overnight parking are prohibited.

PROHIBITED ARTICLES

Possession or use of drugs, alcohol, fireworks, explosives, firearms, bows and arrows, axes, chain saws, and other weapons or cutting tools are prohibited.

PROHIBITED VEHICLES

Commercial vehicles, all-terrain vehicles, motorized bicycles, animal-drawn vehicles, snowmobiles, and any scooter, moped, or other similar motorized vehicle with wheel diameters less than 15 inches are prohibited.

PROPERTY DAMAGE

Defacing, destroying, or otherwise altering Park property is prohibited. No permanent markings may be made on any tree, rock, road, or structure. The Park cannot be held responsible for injury or damage to any person or property.

REGULATED ACTIVITIES

Camping, group picnics, weddings, wedding ceremonies, wedding pictures, commercial and non-profit photography, walk-a-thons, bike-a-thons, live entertainment, and catering services are regulated activities requiring a permit issued by the Superintendent.
