The Palisades of the Hudson

Unless otherwise indicated, all public programs are FREE and open to all, with NO advance registration required.

See below for more information about guided hikes!

Notes on Guided Public Hikes:

Guided hikes are held “drizzle or shine” — heavy or steady precipitation or icy trail conditions may cancel. If in doubt, please call the contact number in the hike description to confirm.

Hike descriptions show an approximate round-trip distance (mi.) and time (hrs.) and a rating provided by the hike leaders: Easy hikes should be suitable for most hikers, including those with little or no hiking experience. Moderate hikes traverse more rugged terrain and slopes, or go at a pace some may find difficult. Challenging hikes are for experienced hikers.

For all hikes, hikers should wear shoes designed for hiking and bring plenty of water to drink. Long-sleeved clothing is recommended for protection against poison ivy and ticks. Remember! Even our “easy” hikes are on trails, not paved surfaces. None of the park’s trails are entirely open or level, and mud and puddles are typical after rainfalls.

Hiking tours for many different interests and ability levels, led by our staff, are scheduled throughout the year. Some of these are themed, including our popular “history hikes,” while other hikes are simply recreational. Guided hikes are free and open to all (parking fees may be in effect), and advance registration is never required to attend.

Some of our most popular programs get the whole family into the act, like going on a Sea Glass Hunt with Mrs. Kearney’s crew!

Several times a year we host a full moon beach fire on the beach at the north end of Alpine Picnic Area.

To commemorate the 1776 British invasion of New Jersey and the beginning of the Continental Army’s strategic “Retreat to Victory,” Retreat Weekend is held each year at Fort Lee Historic Park on the weekend closest to the historic date of November 20. It includes reenactments of eighteenth-century life and weapon and battle demonstrations

Miss Emily in the Kearney House
Events are held each year at the Kearney House during which participants are invited to experience a nineteenth-century Hudson River tavern. Some of these programs are “open-house” and appropriate for children as well as adults, with no reservations required. Other “tavern” programs are for adults and require reservations.
